To All:

We held our Babylon Cup Race this past Friday, June 12. All week we had forecasts of afternoon thunderstorms and Friday was no different. The race committee watched the weather radar right up to the start time. With predictions showing the storm moving east of us (just barely) we called the ball and started the race. Conditions were excellent with WSW winds of 8-12 kts. RC was John Holst, Joe Mulle & myself on Johns powerboat Point of View (nice!). The line was set, course #2 picked and 3 boats started.  Mirage II hit the start first with Rettsie powering through close behind and Aleboat well trimmed and showing a nice clean bottom.

It was a good run to the #9 upwind mark. Rettsie was first around and led the downwind leg as we all kept an eye on the weather. As predicted, the weather passed to the east as the fleet rounded the #6 downwind mark. Then the wind shifted northwest & increased as they sailed through the bridge, making for a "spirited" beat to the upwind finish at the BYC dock. The race lasted about 1.25 hours. Line honors went to team Rettsie with Mirage II & Aleboat finishing 2nd & 3rd.

Final Results of the Babylon Cup Race:

1st place - Rettsie, K Padden

2nd place - Mirage II, G Schneller

3rd place - Aleboat II, E Winberry

After the race we all gathered in the BYC Clubhouse 2nd floor bar & patio for pizza, salad & drinks and to enjoy the beautiful bay views. The awards were presented and we all toasted the weather gods that sent the storm to the east & west and provided clear weather for us to enjoy a great evening race on the bay. We did have pretty dramatic views of the storms too.

My thanks to John Holst for RC duties and providing a great boat, Joe Mulle for helping also and to Kim Caroselli and the BYC team for hosting the awards party at their clubhouse. Their hospitality made for a great night!
