The 2025 Discoverers Race to Atlantique logistics all worked out this year for the hearty racers that came out to enjoy the last SBCC race of the season.
The weather forecast held true and we had 6 boats at the start in mostly cloudy weather and a 12 kt ESE wind. We had only the Race class (no Corinthian class). Bill & Sandy Wheeler did RC and called the Pursuit start at 12:00 noon.
Team Bertha/Matt Rainis led the start with 6 crew (you can't be over-crewed!) and most of the fleet made the upwind mark (Crazy Charlie) close-hauled in one tack. Jewel was first around followed by Tangled up in Blue and Shadow. The wind picked up to 15-20 kts which made the last leg to the finish a tough upwind tacking exercise for the crews. Luckily the tide was with us!
First to finish was Larry Becker in Jewel followed by Shadow and Tangled up in Blue.
Final Discoverers Race Results:
Race class:
1st place- Jewel/L. Becker
2nd place- Shadow/C. Margeson
3rd place- Snoopy/D Deruvo
4th place- Jubilee/R Russo
5th place- Bertha/Team Rainis
6th place- Tangled up in Blue (guest racer)
BSYC only: R G Terry Cup- Larry Becker
All the racers docked at Atlantique for our awards party and refreshments. After a light passing spritze, the skies cleared, the sun came out and we all enjoyed a beautiful afternoon. The SBCC provided a 6 ft hero with all the fixin's & salads (with a huge thank you to Bill & Sandra Wheeler & team!). Also holding up the BSYC tradition, Matt Rainis brought the cooler and the hot dogs. Atlantique had already taken down all the BBQ's but Matt's crew found one BBQ still up and cooked up some great hot dogs for all. Well done and most appreciated!
The Marina staff were great and at 3:30 we all packed up, the staff helped us off the dock and everyone enjoyed a nice downwind sail home.
Club traditions are a wonderful thing and the Discoverers Race has become an excellent way for the SBCC and the BSYC to celebrate the end of our racing seasons together. Thanks to Matt Rainis (BSYC Regatta Chair), Bill Wheeler and all who came out to enjoy this last race.
See you again next year!
